Bacterial Cell Wall

The bacterial cell wall is a rigid, protective layer outside the cytoplasmic membrane, built mainly of peptidoglycan, that determines shape and Gram-stain behavior.

Exceptions / variants:

Wall resists osmotic lysis. β-lactams block cross-linking (PBPs); vancomycin blocks peptide substrate; lysozyme cleaves glycan bonds.
