With John Jumper and the DeepMind team, developed AlphaFold, an AI system that predicts protein 3D structure from amino acid sequence — solving a long-standing grand challenge (breakthrough recognition ~2020–2021; Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 with Jumper and David Baker).
Why It Still Matters
Microbial virulence factors, viral spike proteins, and drug targets are proteins. Structure prediction accelerates hypothesis generation for antimicrobials, vaccines, and enzyme function.
